John Diefenbaker:
The outsider who refused to quit

Written by Lanny Boutin
Illustrated by Gabriel Morrissette

Growing up poor, German, and with First Nation’s peoples as neighbours, John knew what it was like to be an outcast. He dedicated his life to fighting injustice and was only 8 years old when he announced: “Someday I am going to be prime minister.”

A passionate speaker and feisty debater, John stood tall in Parliament, his hand on his hip, stabbing his finger at his target, driving each statement home. As leader of the Opposition, he pushed for One Canada, where everyone would have the same rights.

Working 17-hour days, John achieved many things as prime minister. His government increased payouts for pensions and unemployment insurance, built roads and railway lines in the North, gave indigenous people the right to vote, opened a microwave-communication system, and passed John’s beloved Bill of Rights.
