Sandra Phinney

Sandra Phinney is a freelancer writer from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Her articles have appeared in over 50 Canadian and American publications. Her cover stories and profiles span the worlds of business, science, health and fitness, farming and fishing, aerospace, the outdoors, travel, and tourism to name a few.

Sandra loves the writing life. It's been said that she can find a story in a tree stump. Her assignments are challenging—sometimes hair-raising—and always fun. No two days are ever alike! One day she's interviewing someone in Australia about foraging for food, and the next day she's talking with a captain as he fishes for sculpin in the Bay of Fundy, or chatting with an orchid grower in New York. She also finds the research end of writing quirky and fascinating. She says that it's something like being a private eye or putting pieces of a giant puzzle together.

Sandra freelances from a nook in the forest outside of Yarmouth, NS. She and her husband, Barrie MacGregor, built their own home on the Tusket River. Because their home is so far off the main road, they powered up with solar energy and are totally off the grid. Their three grown up kids think this is all pretty awesome.

From her perch in the woods, Sandra also creates short documentaries for CBC radio, writes scripts for video productions, and is on the research team for a popular TV show called Chef at Large. She also teaches a portion of the “Writing for Publication” course at NSCC (Burridge Campus, Yarmouth) and delivers writing workshops.

One of her favourite things to do is visit with kids. She's part of a special program in Nova Scotia called Writers In The Schools (WITS), and she likes going to different schools to meet with students and talk about the writing life. Another thing that she's crazy about is canoeing. She has an old beat up blue canoe that she calls Clem (short for Clementine).

Sandra was thrilled to bits when she was invited to write the book about Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He loved nature and the great outdoors—and he too loved to paddle! She believes that it's a great honour to be selected to tell this prime minister's story.
