Heather Grace Stewart
Currently writing Jackfruit biographies on Wilfrid Laurier and Kim Campbell, Heather (nee Grace) Stewart was born in Ottawa, in 1972. She wrote her first poem at age 5, inspired by falling down a lot while trying to figure skate. “At the Arena” was published in her primary school’s newsletter.
From that moment, she was hooked on writing.
At Queen’s University in Kingston, Heather honed her skills by writing poetry for the Queen’s Journal, ASH literary journal, and the Tricolour yearbook. After graduating in 1995 with a B.A.(Hon.) in Canadian Studies, she took a graduate degree in Journalism at Concordia University in Montreal.
Heather learned “the ropes” at The Monitor, a local weekly. Then in 1996, she became associate editor of four national magazines: Equinox, Canadian Wildlife, Wild! and Harrowsmith Country Life. In 1999, she founded her freelance writing, editing, and photography agency—called Graceful Publications—where she enjoys being her own boss to this very day.
Bubble Mud and Other Poems, Heather’s first book, is a quirky, feel-good collection of poems and word games for kids of all ages. It made the top five entries in the International 2002 EPIC children’s book competition. She is now working on her second book of poems for children, and enjoys giving readings at public schools.
Well-versed in juggling career and contemplation, Heather wrote A Moment for Me as a lined journal for busy adults. It’s decorated with her poems and nature photographs to soothe, inspire, and relax. She continues to publish poetry in international anthologies, most recently in Routes.
Heather lives in Quebec with her husband Bill, an engineer. They share their home with a couple crazy cats, named Sam and Shadow, who adore sitting on Heather’s keyboard when she is trying to write.
In her free time, Heather enjoys photography and inline skating (and is pleased to say she hardly ever falls down anymore).
