Once Upon a Pond
The world's wetlands are very important to the ecological balance of the planet. They help control flooding by collecting excess rainfall and then releasing it slowly. Wetlands filter contaminants out of the water as it returns to rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers. On top of this, wetlands are home to many species of amphibians, birds, mammals, and plants in our ecosystems.
But for many years, swamps, ponds, bogs, and marshes were thought to be ugly, mosquito-infested, and useless. Now, scientists and land-use planners realize just how important they are.
Once Upon A Pond is a simple, beautifully illustrated tale of just how important our wetlands are and how to begin thinking about sustainable development in our cities and rural areas.
